This Week: House returns, NAFCU kicks off CEOs and Senior Execs Conference
The House returns this week with several key hearings lined up, including several budget request hearings. Looking forward, the House Financial Services Committee’s May schedule includes a markup where the committee will potentially discuss key bills for credit unions including Chairwoman Maxine Waters, D-Calif., recently introduced Expanding Access for Underserved Communities.
The NAFCU-backed bill would allow all types of federal credit unions to add underserved areas to their field of membership and adds "banking deserts," areas not within 10 miles of a branch of a financial institution, to the definition of an underserved area. Credit unions can engage lawmakers on this issue and more, including new efforts to regulate interchange, via NAFCU’s Grassroots Action Center.
In addition, the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on the Financial Stability Oversight Council’s (FSOC) report to Congress as well as a hearing to address climate change with energy efficient and resilient housing.
NAFCU will monitor the following hearings and report on relevant updates via NAFCU Today:
- Tuesday, NAFCU’s Regulatory Committee will convene for its monthly meeting;
- Wednesday, the House Select Committee Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth Committee will hold a hearing on targeted policies to expand economic opportunities for underserved communities;
- Wednesday, the House Financial Services Committee will convene for a hearing on the bond rating industry;
- Thursday, the House Financial Services Committee will meet to discuss the Financial Stability Oversight Council’s report to Congress;
- Thursday, comments are due to NAFCU regarding the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s increased forty-year term for load modifications; and
- Friday, the House Financial Services Committee’s AI Task Force will hold a hearing on using AI for effective regulation technology.
In addition, NAFCU kicks off its CEOs and Senior Executives Conference Wednesday where attendees will come together to exchange ideas and solve common challenges, as well as gain fresh insights from industry experts on building a better credit union.
