The May-June issue of The NAFCU Journal is available now and features a breakdown of how changes to the community development financial institution (CDFI) application may affect participation, how credit unions can best support older members, and more. Content from this issue can be viewed anytime on the magazine’s virtual hub.
The cover feature, “How CDFI Changes Could Affect Participation,” dives into NAFCU’s concerns regarding recent proposals related to the CDFI application process and how they may impact credit unions. The association has shared its opposition of the proposed changes to the CDFI certification standards and has joined with other trades to raise concerns to lawmakers.
The second feature article, “Protecting Older Members,” tackles the best ways protect members from elder abuse scams with insights from NAFCU Regulatory Affairs Counsel James Akin and CFPB Office of Older Americans Assistant Director Deborah Royster.
The final feature, “Centralized BOI Database May Streamline Account Openings,” provides an overview of where the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network’s (FinCEN) implementation of the Corporate Transparency Act stands.

[02:27] Having a leader who can really communicate cyber risks and understand how ready that institution is to deal with cyber events is incredibly important. [05:36] We need to be talking about risk openly. We need to be documenting and really understanding what remediating risk looks like and how you do that strategically. [16:38] Governance, risk, compliance, and adherence to regulatory controls are all being looked at much more closely. You are also seeing other technology that is coming into the fold directly responsible for helping CISOs navigate those waters. [18:28] The reaction from the governing bodies is directly related to the needs of the position.
