NCUA announces new office to promote accountability, ethical conduct

NCUAThe NCUA Wednesday announced the creation of a new Office of Ethics Counsel, which was approved by the board during its closed meeting in March.

Following allegations of misconduct at a NCUA office, NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger earlier this year called for the agency to have better oversight and accountability.

Approved by the board during its closed meeting in March, the new office will:

  • will certify the agency's compliance with relevant federal ethics laws and regulations;
  • promote accountability and ethical conduct; and
  • help ensure the success of the NCUA's ethics programs.

Following the allegations, the agency had indicated that it would create a new office, as well as  supplement existing anti-harassment training programs, and offer additional third-party counseling services to employees.

The search is currently underway for a Chief Ethics Counsel who will lead the office and serve as the agency's most senior ethics official. The position will report directly to the NCUA Board and be supervised by Chairman Rodney Hood.
