NAFCU, trades offer recommendations for robotext proposal

PhoneNAFCU joined a group of organizations on an ex parte letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Thursday, providing recommendations for its Report and Order requiring providers to block texts purporting to be from numbers on a reasonable Do-Not-Originate list and make available a single point of contact for text message blocking complaints.

The commission will meet next Thursday, March 16, to consider the Report and Order as well as a further notice of proposed rulemaking, which would require further blocking of illegal robotexts, expand Do-Not-Call protections to robotexts, and protect consumers from getting robotexts and robocalls from multiple, unexpected callers when they provide their consent on websites for comparison shopping.

The groups outlined several suggestions for the FCC on this matter, including:

  • enhancing transparency and improving redress by requiring wireless mobile providers to also include a link to their response process that identifies the response code and other relevant information regarding the notification process; and
  • seeking comment on non-discrimination policies to determine whether or how the FCC can ensure competitively neutral and content neutral grounds for blocking when undertaken as part of the industry’s voluntary blocking programs.

NAFCU previously joined with financial services trades and other organizations on a letter to the FCC regarding its crackdown on illegal texts, reiterating the need to ensure these efforts don’t hinder financial institutions and businesses from providing consumers with need-to-know information.

NAFCU will continue its advocacy to ensure credit unions can contact their members regarding important, time-sensitive information.
