WASHINGTON – NAFCU President Fred Becker underscored the critical role of defense credit unions in serving the financial needs of men and women in uniform and their families. NAFCU's Defense Credit Union Summit will be held on June 29 at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco in conjunction with NAFCU's 44th Annual Conference & Exhibition, which runs from June 28 – July 2.

"The regulations that apply to defense credit unions are unique and require rigorous review and understanding beyond those of traditional credit unions to ensure compliance to the specialized rules that are intended to safeguard the financial security of our servicemembers and their families," said Becker. "To that end, we are delighted to be hosting the extraordinary panel of experts to facilitate greater understanding among defense credit unions of these distinctive rules."

Holly Petraeus, who is tasked with establishing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's Office of Servicemember Affairs, will be the keynote speaker for the event's luncheon. Petraeus is the director of the Office of Servicemember Affairs, which will partner with the Department of Defense to bolster financial education for military families, address complaints and questions from military families about financial issues, and work with federal and state agencies to strengthen consumer protection efforts for military families.

In addition, Gregory Huckabee, Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) expert and associate professor of business law at the University of South Dakota Beacom School of Business, will bring his critical insight on the vital compliance issues of this expanded legislation.

The Defense Credit Union Summit is an annual gathering to address defense credit union issues of common concern. The summit will include a luncheon with key personnel from the DoD. In addition, there will be a Defense Credit Union Welcome Reception the evening of June 28.
