Interagency statement urges use of Emergency Rental Assistance program
Secretaries of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Treasury Department, the Department of Agriculture, the VA, along with FHFA Acting Director Sandra Thompson released a joint statement Monday on preventing evictions in light of the expiration of the CDC's eviction moratorium.
The statement encourages owners and operators to access Emergency Rental Assistance to avoid evicting a tenant for non-payment and notes that the resources are available in every state, along with local programs available in many counties and cities.
"Our country and economy are in a stronger position now than they were in January 2021, yet households across the country, especially those that are not vaccinated, remain vulnerable to COVID-19 and its associated impacts, including housing insecurity," wrote the group. "Helping our fellow Americans, including our Veterans, keep their homes will go a long way in making sure that they have one less thing to worry about as they rebuild their lives coming out of this crisis and try to keep their loved ones safe."

Of note, the FHFA Friday announced an extension on the government-sponsored enterprises' (GSE) moratorium on single-family real estate owned (REO) evictions until Sept. 30, 2021. The moratorium was previously set to expire July 31. In addition, the FHFA previously announced new eviction protections for tenants of multifamily properties with GSE-backed mortgages.
