Housing experts talk reform in free NAFCU webinar

housing marketNAFCU and top housing experts today will provide credit unions with insights to a number of housing finance reform efforts, including proposed capital requirements for the government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) and maintaining credit unions' unfettered access to the secondary mortgage market.

The webinar is slated for 2 p.m. Registration is free, however, you must register to attend. Register here.

The webinar, A Panel Discussion of America’s Housing Finance System, will review changes in leadership at the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) and how GSEs have evolved since the conservatorship of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in 2008. Participants will also gain insight to proposed solutions for reforming the current housing finance system and how those solutions can prevent another bailout of too-big-to-fail entities.

There has been a lot of conversation on housing finance reform efforts recently: The White House this week indicated it will work with Congress to ensure safeguards are in place to protect taxpayers. House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters said in her priorities for the 116th Congress that she plans to maintain transparency and access to the mortgage market to ensure credit unions and community banks are not disadvantaged. Housing finance reform is also on the Senate Banking Committee's priorities for this session.

NAFCU Director of Regulatory Affairs Ann Kossachev will lead the panel discussion with:

  • Karan Kaul, research associate for the Urban Institute;
  • Ed Pinto, co-director for the American Enterprise Institute’s Center on Housing Markets and Finance; and
  • Sandra Thompson, deputy director of the Division of Housing Mission and Goals for FHFA.
