HMDA data on mortgage lending now available
Data on mortgage lending transactions from more than 5,000 U.S. financial institutions – required by the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) – is now available from the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC).
In 2018, although the number of reporting institutions declined 2.9 percent from the previous year, the data still includes information on 12.9 million home loan applications. The FFIEC said that 10.3 million applications were closed-end while 2.3 million were open-end; 378,000 applications did not disclose whether it was open-end or close-end.
The FFIEC said that caution is required when comparing HMDA data across multiple years due to frequent changes in definitions and values.

The CFPB is currently considering two proposals related to HMDA: an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) related to data collection and reporting requirements, and a proposed rule to raise HMDA's transactional and institutional reporting thresholds. The bureau extended and reopened the comment periods for the ANPR and proposed rule, respectively, to allow stakeholders time to review the HMDA data.
NAFCU previously offered support for increasing the HMDA reporting thresholds and specific suggestions to provide even more relief to credit unions. The association will review the national data and consider additional feedback before the Oct. 15 comment deadlines for both proposals. More information can be found in NAFCU's Regulatory Alerts.
