Berger featured in CEO Update
Jan. 28, 2014 – CEO Update on Jan. 24 published a profile of NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger, highlighting his views on lobbying strategy as well as his leadership style.
The magazine feature tracks Berger's political involvement from volunteering for campaigns at a young age to working on Capitol Hill as a chief of staff.
Berger discusses the challenges of keeping up with all the "different moving parts" in government relations, which helps keep things interesting, the article says. "I equate lobbying with three-dimensional chess. It's the convergence of policy, politics and business," he is quoted saying.
It also lists the three traits Berger says are possessed by many of the best lobbyists. "They are ‘extremely smart' people who know their issues cold; they maintain good relationships with policymakers; and their company is a pleasure," the article notes. It quotes Berger adding that last trait "is sometimes overlooked, but can make a difference when it comes to effectiveness."
The magazine described his leadership style as emphasizing the big picture and strategic direction and avoiding micromanaging. "I don't care how you do it – as long as you do it with integrity, and with the members' best interests at heart," he is quoted saying. Berger recently launched the Berger Leadership Blog on NAFCU's website, with new posts every Friday.
