Top political risks to credit unions
The new Credit Card Competition Act in the Senate would be a detriment to credit unions and your members if passed. It would essentially be a back-door price control on your credit card interchange. While the bill seeks to limit these new requirements to only institutions over $100 billion, the history of the failed exemption in the Durbin amendment has shown that market changes will negatively impact all institutions.
The CFPB has proposed a rule that would slash credit card late fees by over 60% from $30 to $8, taking away yet another critical source of fee income that many credit unions use to provide affordable financial services to their members. Here are 5 more:
- CFPB attacks on credit union non-interest income
- Leveling the playing field with unregulated fintechs
- Bank attacks on our tax exemption
- Increasing risk of redundant new laws on privacy
- Government takeover of small business lending
