CU Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run Sunday
March 30, 2012 – In two days, thousands of runners from around the globe will gather on the Washington Monument grounds for the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run, an annual event that in 2012 will mean $515,000 in funds donated to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
This is the 11th consecutive year that credit unions have sponsored this race and the 40th since the race's inception. Fund raised for CMN will go to benefit 170 children's hospitals across the U.S. and Canada.
NAFCU is a sponsor of the run and has 12 runners in this year's event. The run begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
A number of activities take place around the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile, including the Cherry Blossom Capitol Hill Competition, sponsored by Congressional FCU and Senate Employees FCU. NAFCU and CUNA support the Hill competition. Fred Becker and Bill Cheney, the trades' chief executives, attended. Congressional FCU President and CEO Charles Mallon led off the event
Members of Congress appearing to build awareness of the event included Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn, D-S.C., Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., Sue Myrick, R-N.C., Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., Rob Woodall, R-Ga., and Steven Palazzo, R-Miss. Both Woodall and Palazzo are participating in Sunday's Cherry Blossom run.
