More sign onto MBL, exam bills

Two House members – including one newly sworn-in – added their names Tuesday to H.R. 1418, the credit union member business loan cap-lift bill introduced by Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif.

Reps. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Ore., and Ron Paul, R-Texas, are the latest to join the cosponsor list for H.R. 1418, which would permit NCUA to allow an increase in eligible credit unions' MBL cap from 12.25 percent to 27.5 percent of assets. Signing onto the NAFCU-backed measure was one of the first things Bonamici did following her swearing-in Tuesday. H.R. 1418 now has 116 cosponsors. (Earlier this week, NAFCU President and CEO Fred Becker urged Congress to reject the misinformation being peddled by the banking trades pass the MBL cap-lift legislation.)

Tuesday also brought 16 new cosponsors to H.R. 3461, the Financial Institutions Examination Fairness and Reform Act. NAFCU witness Jeanne Kucey, president and CEO of JetStream FCU and a NAFCU Board member, testified in favor of this bill Feb. 1 before the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit.

The bill would create an examination ombudsman office within the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council and require consistency in exam standards. With Tuesday's additions, the bill has 97 cosponsors.

Cosponsors added Tuesday include Reps. Mike Pence, R-Ind., Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., Charlie Dent, R-Pa., Kenny Marchant, R-Texas, Ben Chandler, D-Ky., Lynn Jenkins, R-Kan., Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., Tom Cole, R-Okla., Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., Steve Stivers, R-Ohio, Edward Whitfield, R-Ky., Michael Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., Randy Forbes, R-Va., Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, Howard Coble, R-N.C., and Bobby Schilling, R-Ill.

H.R. 1418 and H.R. 3461 await mark-up.
