Truer Words Have Never Been Spoken
Written by Anthony Demangone
NAFCU isn't a credit union, but we do have a board of directors. Â We just finished up what I like to call "board week" at NAFCU. Â We held our regular board meeting, the board meeting of our subsidiary, as well as a number (one, two, three) of other side meetings during the week.Â
I love our board. Â So for me, "board week" is a grand time. I get to rub shoulders with 11 successful credit union CEOs. Â When I'm smart, I sit back and listen. Â With my yapper shut. Â Anyone who knows me, though, knows that I'm rarely smart in that way.
That being said, in a rare instance of personal self-inflicted silence, one of NAFCU's directors shared with me this view of management. Â Please allow me to paraphrase...
As a younger employee, I really enjoyed my "work." Â There were reports to be reviewed, files to be completed, and policies to be read. Â I had my "to do" pile here, and my completed work would be placed there. Â And it was gratifying. Â And simple. Â I could look and easily see what had to be done. Â And at the end of the day, I could see what I had accomplished.
Now, life isn't that simple. Â I rarely have a clear picture of what I must do on a given day when I arrive. Â And at the end of the day, it isn't always clear what I have accomplished.Â
We talked a bit about management. Â And then there was a pause. Â And our director continued.
You know, I wasn't complaining just there. Â It just is what it is. Â I've loved every day. Â I wouldn't trade my job for anything.
Like I said. Â I love our board.
Have a great weekend, everyone. Â
