Berger highlights CU involvement in communities, charities on leadership podcast
On a new episode of the SEE YOU LEAD podcast, NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger joined host Glynn Frechette to talk fintechs, credit union involvement in communities and charities, supporting servicemembers and more.
Berger spoke passionately about how doing business with credit unions supports community and charity interests: “When you do business with a credit union, they are giving back to their communities. And you see them there.”
“You see the board at the little league fields, you see the banners at the volleyball matches or the swim meets. They’re everywhere and that’s because they care about the communities because they don’t have shareholders or stockholders putting on those financial pressures so they reinvest in their communities,” continued Berger. “Doing business with a credit union is a brilliant move because they are everywhere and they are taking care of their members, and they are taking care of their communities and they are taking care of Main Street.”
Berger wrapped up the conversation by highlighting NAFCU’s work and support of veteran groups, including partnering with the Defense Credit Union Council to advocate on top priorities, to partnering with organizations like Folds of Honor, Wreaths Across America at Arlington National Cemetery, and Project Healing Waters.
“Financial support is always welcomed by these terrific veterans’ groups but more importantly, they need people… There are always ways to help,” said Berger. “We have our freedoms and the freedoms that we enjoy is because of the veterans. We have an obligation to take care our veterans as well as our current service people.”

[05:36] We need to be talking about risk openly. We need to be documenting and really understanding what remediating risk looks like and how you do that strategically. [16:38] Governance, risk, compliance, and adherence to regulatory controls are all being looked at much more closely. You are also seeing other technology that is coming into the fold directly responsible for helping CISOs navigate those waters.
