This week: House ready to get to work as McCarthy elected speaker; NAFCU hosts webinar

Capitol

All eyes were on the House of Representatives last week as members elected a Speaker to lead the Chamber. On the 15th ballot early Saturday morning, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., obtained the votes needed to secure the top position. Following the vote, House members were officially sworn-in for the 118th Congress. The Senate also convened and new members were sworn in, but unlike the House, leadership remains unchanged from last Congress. The Senate is now in recess until late January, and during that time NAFCU’s award-winning advocacy team will continue their work on Capitol Hill meeting with lawmakers to strengthen the industry.

“NAFCU congratulates Rep. Kevin McCarthy as the newly elected Speaker of the House for the 118th Congress,” said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. “We look forward to working closely with McCarthy and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to ensure credit unions continue to have a seat at the table in Washington so in turn they can grow and thrive.”

The association will also host a webinar tomorrow on data privacy and security issues. During the webinar, credit union compliance professionals will delve into the changes to the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) because of the passage of the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), review the impact of the proposed implementing regulations, identify and discuss implementation issues, and examine CCPA enforcement. Data protection is among NAFCU’s 2023 priorities as the association fights for a comprehensive federal standard, rather than a patchwork of state laws.

Additionally, credit unions are encouraged to share insights and perspectives on the most important topics for the credit union industry in NAFCU’s Economic & CU Monitor survey. Responses to the survey are due Wednesday; the survey can be filled out online.

Of note, NAFCU extended the HOLIDAY $300 savings to Friday, Jan. 13 for registrations for all 2023 conferences and online training subscriptions, including the association’s revamped Engage 2023: NAFCU's Annual Conference, happening June 27 – 30 in Southern California. The HOLIDAY code can be used as many times and for as many people as needed.
