Pulled over...in a cab

Written by Anthony Demangone, Powered by NAFCU

I'm at NAFCU's Regulatory Compliance Conference and our Regulatory Compliance Seminar - both are being held in beautiful San Diego.

I almost didn't make it. For the first time in my life, my cab from the airport was pulled over by a San Diego police officer.

And I'll tell you this. It was justified.

My cab driver was very creative. He used the entire lane and some of the next one. He wasn't bothered by white lines, yellow lines or red lights.

The deed that led to the ticket was egregious. He blew through a red light that had gone red about 2 seconds before we went through the intersection.

As the police officer approached the car, he gave me a look that communicated "Sorry, buddy. I had no choice with the way this guy is driving."

The view out the rear-view window. Welcome to San Diego!

And then a funny thing happened. After the ticket, he drove like...a human being.

Guess what...compliance works!  Rules are put in place (lines, red lights, stop signs) and then they are enforced (tickets).

As I sat through the conferences, I was proud of what I saw.

  • Proud of the compliance officers doing their best to keep their credit unions on the right path.
  • Proud of our industry - we wear the white hats. And sitting in that room, it was abundantly clear. As an industry, we understand ethics and doing the right thing by our members.
  • And I'm proud to be associated with my colleagues. Brandy Bruyere, NAFCU's VP of Regulatory Compliance, is simply fantastic. She and her team love helping America's compliance professionals weave their way through the regulatory and compliance maze that is before us. No one does it better than them. If you haven't worked with Brandy or her team, you're missing out. They are one of the best parts of being a NAFCU member.

Our 2018 conference line-up is now available. Brandy and her team will lead the way again with the best compliance training out there. Please check it out and make plans to join us.

Oh, and a solid thank you to Bridgeforce for being a Seminar Thought Leader Sponsor. We appreciate the solid assist.Â
