NAFCU, trades write to FCC on illegal text crackdown

FCCNAFCU joined with financial services trades and other organizations to write the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding its crackdown on illegal texts, reiterating the need to ensure these efforts don’t hinder financial institutions and businesses from providing consumers with need-to-know information.

While the groups are supportive of the FCC’s “proposal to require Providers to block text messages that are from invalid, unallocated, or unused numbers,” they cautioned the FCC to avoid preventing credit unions and other financial institutions from effectively and efficiently communicating with their members via automated messages.

The letter requested the FCC exclude “short code” messages – texts that businesses send from five- or six-digit numbers – from any mandatory blocking. Additionally, the trades urged the FCC to require text message service providers to notify a sender when its texts have been blocked, allowing lawful senders an opportunity to resolve the block and get back to efficiently communicating with their members and customers.

NAFCU has joined on similar joint trades letters regarding potential illegal and spam communication, including a letter on robocalls.

NAFCU will continue to monitor this proposal and update members via NAFCU Today.
