NAFCU celebrates 55 years serving the CU industry
NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger celebrated NAFCU’s 55th anniversary this year in a message sent to members Thursday. Berger reflected on all that NAFCU and the credit union industry has achieved together and looks forward to continued success.
“At NAFCU, we truly believe that your institutions are the best choice for American consumers and Main Street America,” wrote Berger. “It is an honor to represent you and the credit union industry.”
Since the celebration of NAFCU’s 50th anniversary in 2017, NAFCU has continued to fight for credit union priorities to ensure the industry has the tools needed to successfully operate and grow. The association’s award-winning advocacy team has participated in yearly NCUA budget hearings to ensure prudent management of funds, secured passage of regulatory and member business lending cap relief, won a 2019 lawsuit regarding field of membership, helped achieve reform of the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and anti-money laundering regulations, and just this year helped to secure the passage of the NAFCU-backed Credit Union Governance Modernization Act.
When the coronavirus pandemic presented credit unions with unprecedented new realities, the industry did not hesitate to step up for members. At NAFCU, a shift in priorities was required as well, as the association began advocating boldly for industry relief, including enhancements to the Central Liquidity Facility and necessary changes made to NCUA’s capitalizing interest rule. We also engaged with the Small Business Administration to ensure the industry was able to effectively lend through the paycheck protection program.
In addition, over the past five years alone, NAFCU has:
- Written over 150 letters annually to regulators and Congress to fight for credit union priorities;
- Met with decisionmakers in Washington during dozens of meetings annually;
- Hosted 61 in-person and virtual conferences;
- Provided access to 310+ educational webinars;
- Answered 33,112 compliance questions for our members;
- Published 770+ Compliance Blog posts, articles, guides and tools;
- Provided opportunities for nearly 3,000 professionals to earn and maintain industry-leading certifications for compliance, risk, BSA and volunteer expertise; and

[02:27] Having a leader who can really communicate cyber risks and understand how ready that institution is to deal with cyber events is incredibly important. [05:36] We need to be talking about risk openly. We need to be documenting and really understanding what remediating risk looks like and how you do that strategically. [16:38] Governance, risk, compliance, and adherence to regulatory controls are all being looked at much more closely. You are also seeing other technology that is coming into the fold directly responsible for helping CISOs navigate those waters. [18:28] The reaction from the governing bodies is directly related to the needs of the position.
