Through the filter of service

Written by Anthony Demangone

I'm not saying that it changed my life, but I will say this: It has stuck with me  since I read it.

Dan Rockwell wrote this post back in 2012: The Only Reason You Are Here.

In the post, Dan argues that we all are here for one reason: to serve.

The simple, uncomplicated principle of success is you are here to serve. The better you serve – the more value you add – the more success you’ll enjoy.

When you see things through the filter of service, choice and actions become easy. It unlocks a powerful, yet simple, way of doing things.

When you serve, you'll make your boss' job easier. And those that work for and with you.

When you serve, team comes first.

When you serve, you help others understand.

You remove obstacles. You empower. You clarify. You help colleagues learn from mistakes.

It is very easy to lose that filter of service. What does the world owe me? How can others make my life easier?

I'm as guilty as anyone.

But when the filter of service is back in place, things work better. The world is less harsh. Problems become opportunities for service and improvement.

Maybe that's the magic of our industry. At our core, we exist to serve our members.

We exist to serve.

I like the sound of that.Â
