NAFCU Chief Economist and Vice President of Research Curt Long joined Fox News' America's News HQ with Leland Vittert and Arthel Neville Monday for an exclusive interview to discuss the job market and the importance of providing small businesses with relief during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Many jobs are still in a vulnerable position right now,” said Long. “Consumers should pay down obligations and set aside additional reserves in the event of more long-term job loss.” Long also noted that “if too many small businesses go under while we await to reopen, those jobs that we are expecting to be there are not going to be there.”

“The focus of Congress should be on supporting small businesses,” added Long. “The PPP was a signature program enacted in the CARES Act that provided some support to small business but more is needed.”

Long explained during the interview that lawmakers will be tasked with balancing incentives for small businesses and employees during future relief efforts. He noted that policymakers should focus their efforts on supporting small businesses so they can emerge from current economic conditions ready to hire.

Since the coronavirus pandemic began, NAFCU has been at the forefront of the national media discussion. Earlier this year, NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger joined CNN International's Quest Means Business and Long joined Fox News at Night with Shannon Bream to discuss the economic impact of the coronavirus.

Additionally, NAFCU’s advocacy on coronavirus relief legislation has garnered national media attention from the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Bloomberg, and others. Credit unions have also seen their concerns with the Small Business Administration’s paycheck protection program raised by national media outlets
