NCUA Establishes Share Insurance Hotline; Financial Literacy Websites

Tuesday, NCUA announced the establishment of a share insurance hotline and toolkit.

The NCUA Insurance Call Center, operating from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (EDT) Monday through Friday, has insurance experts available to answer questions about the coverage provided by NCUA share insurance. The toll-free Insurance Call Center number is 1-800-755-1030, extension 1.

Read all about the development here.  The toolkit, available here, bundles all available information on share insurance.

Kudos to NCUA for doing this.  And I'd like to think that the hotline phone glows red when it rings, much like the Bat Phone.  (Am I dating myself using this reference?  If you polled today's high school kids, what percentage would understand what the Bat Phone is?)

Credit unions are huge fans of financial literacy.  If you have someone at your credit union who works on financial literacy, you may want to point them toward these two websites.

  1. www.mymoney.gov: Various financial tools and links, discussing financial areas such as home ownership, budgeting and taxes, and financial planning, have received hundreds of thousands of hits.  The website is available in English and Spanish.  Soon, they will be launching a 60 day survey on the usability of the site.
  2. www.controlyourcredit.gov: This website is designed to improve young Americans’ financial literacy and decision making.  The website includes an interactive video game.  The game begins in a drab hotel called the Bad Credit Hotel.  The game’s objective is to obtain “inventory” by learning various credit tips.  The player wins the game by collecting ten inventory items.  The winning player is upgraded to the luxurious room 850, which not so coincidentally is the same number as the highest possible credit score.
