Going through the motions...

Written by Anthony Demangone

"Do you have any idea what she's saying?" he asked with a chuckle?

That was the gentleman seated next to me on the plane as the flight attendant rattled off the pre-flight instructions.

The flight attendant had memorized the pre-flight routine. And she was going through it so quickly, no one could really understand what she was saying.

Which kind of defeats the purpose for an announcement, don't you think?

But I didn't really judge her too harshly. I think I go through motions at times as well.

  • At a meeting. I might be there, but have my mind on other things.
  • Or I'm at a sporting event for Kate and Briggs, but I'm checking my phone.
  • Or when I review a document, but not really "review" it too thoroughly.

Going through the motions is simply a waste. It wastes your time, and everyone else's.

The secret is to focus on what you're doing at this very moment, and give it your full attention and best effort.

Easier said than done. But far better than going through the motions.
