UC Berkeley: 80,000 hit by cyber attack

The University of California Berkeley announced that 80,000 people in its system have been affected by a cyber attack which has exposed social security and bank account numbers.

Reuters reports the system includes information from current and former students, as well as faculty members and vendors. The university said "there was no evidence that attackers actually took any personally information," but urged those affected to watch their financial accounts.

The hack occurred in December because of a security flaw exposed during a system update. The university is working with the FBI and a private computer investigation company.

Reuters noted that earlier in February, a California-based hospital paid hackers $17,000 to regain control of its system after a ransomware attack.

NAFCU continues to push for a strong national data security standard from Congress, and the association has emphasized that data security should be coupled with better cybersecurity measures as well.
