Make an Impact and Become an Advocate; July Issue of BSA Blast

Written by Dan O’Brien, Director of Political Affairs

On Monday, NAFCU launched a new and improved Grassroots Action Center to better serve credit union professionals, like you, in your efforts to engage with your members of Congress.  We understand that the demands of the compliance community continue to increase day-by-day as federal regulators such as the CFPB and NCUA continue to finalize the plethora of regulations from Dodd-Frank. NAFCU wants to be a resource to help your voice be heard, which is why we developed these essential grassroots resources to make it easier for you to weigh in with your members of Congress and to be an advocate for the industry. The more they hear from you, their constituents, the more attention they will pay to the ever increasing regulatory burdens of credit unions.

You can have an impact on legislation by participating in grassroots advocacy and have input into the collective voice.  The outcome on an issue is often won, lost, delayed or altered by a robust grassroots advocacy program. Our advocacy efforts are made stronger by the skills and expertise of our members.  As the director of political affairs, I want NAFCU’s grassroots efforts to be broad and diverse in participation.  We need compliance experts to share their invaluable firsthand knowledge about the unnecessary burdens over-regulation is placing on credit unions.

Please to go to NAFCU’s Grassroots Action Center today and contact your members of Congress.  Encourage them to support and cosponsor key pieces of legislation like the Credit Union Risk-Based Capital Study Act of 2015 (H.R. 2769), the National Credit Union Administration Budget Transparency Act (H.R. 2287) and the Data Security Act of 2015 (H.R. 2205 and S. 961). All these bills cover different portions of NAFCU’s Five Point Plan for Regulatory Relief.  Share your stories about regulatory burdens and how they are impacting your credit union with your members of Congress. It will help NAFCU’s lobbyists in their legislative efforts, strengthen our advocacy and show Congress that we are serious about enacting real relief for our nation’s credit unions.

If you have any interest in learning more about NAFCU’s grassroots advocacy efforts, you can email me directly at dobrien@nafcu.org.  Please remember to come join the fight for regulatory relief at NAFCU’s 2015 Congressional Caucus from September 14-17, 2015, in Washington, DC.  Click here to find out more!

Thanks in advance for your participation in legislative process.
