Technique or Attitude

The NCAA men's basketball tournament is about to wrap up. As usual, it was filled with upsets and buzzer beaters.Â
But my favorite part came during a press conference.
After a win against Baylor, South Carolina head coach Frank Martin settled in for a press conference. Sports Illustrated for Kids had a reporter there, and the 13-year-old raised his hand.Â
âÂÂCoach, congratulations on the win tonight. Your team clearly won the defensive battle tonight. When you coach and teach your team defense, whatâÂÂs more important: technique or attitude?âÂÂ
What a great question. Â And Coach Martin agreed. Here is how he responded.
âÂÂFirst of all, amount of respect to you. ThatâÂÂs a heck of a question. IâÂÂve been doing this a long time, and thatâÂÂs the first time anyoneâÂÂs ever asked me that. ThatâÂÂs a heck of a question.
âÂÂAttitude comes first. We gotta have guys that are gonna believe in our mission, that are gonna believe in what we wanna do. Once they believe, then we can teach them the technique. It all starts with our mindset, and weâÂÂve got guys that are completely bought in to what we do.âÂÂ
Technique or attitude?Â
It is attitude.
If you agree, as yourself this? How do you recruit attitude? Where can you see it? How do you uncover it during interviews?
As always, have a great week, guys.Â
