Green Eggs, Ham, and Happiness

Written by Anthony Demangone

I'm fairly new to this parenting thing. I'm only six years in. But last night, i think I learned a valuable lesson.

As Kate and Briggs were going to bed, I pulled out that Dr. Seuss classic, Green Eggs and Ham.

As I opened the book, it dawned on me.

"Kate and Briggs," I said. "I think you guys can read this one tonight."

It took a while, but with a little help, Kate and Briggs took turn reading pages. And we finished the book.

"You just read a book," I said with a smile.

"Will you tell Mommy what we did?" they asked.

I shook my head yes, and they fell asleep with a smile.

I've achieved a number of things in my life. And those things gave me some happiness.

But not as much as seeing them push themselves to accomplish something. And how proud they were when they were done.

Is there a lesson in this? Who is to say?

As for now, I'm content. I am. I am. I'm as content as Sam-I-Am.
