The Best Writing Advice Given to Me

Written by Anthony Demangone, Powered by NAFCU

All of us are writers.

Memos. Emails. Website copy.

Sometimes, writing is difficult. You start writing. You then edit the document. You set it aside. You pick it back up. And then you realize the document is choppy and unorganized.

NAFCU's Dan Berger gave me the best writing advice I've heard. He often is the last stop/editor for a document.

After we read through a lengthy memo together, Dan looked at me.

"Anthony - what are you trying to communicate in this document?"

When I described to Dan what I was trying to communicate, I used fewer words. I cut to the chase. I was clear and straightforward.

"Anthony, why don't you just say that? Instead of that 2-page memo?

He was right. My personal "Cliff Notes" version of my document was direct. Concise. It was better.

Try it sometime. It works.

Speaking of things that work, make plans to have someone from your credit union attend our Compliance Seminar or Compliance School. Both are in San Diego in October. The early bird is tomorrow, so if you know you are planning on going - please take advantage of the savings.
