Another rotation; Another Opportunity
Written by Anthony Demangone
Baseball's Spring Training is upon us.
I won't bother you flowerful language showing how Spring Training is a metaphor for life's opportunities and new beginnings. (It's true. But I won't talk about that.)
I like Spring Training because it is a reminder that life is full of regular patterns that repeat.Â
The sun will come up tomorrow. Spring Training happens each year. Monthly meetings take place...well, each month.Â
Each revolution gives you a decision. You can try to improve things in the process or you can coast.Â
If you can tweak the process in a way that creates even a small improvement, it is well worthwhile.Â
Here's why. This graph shows the compounding effects of a continuous 1-percent improvement.
And if you doubt how effective that can be, read this article (HBR) about how the British Cycling team used small improvements to turn around its program.Â
So, here's a possible task for you or someone on your team.
- Identify regular processes in your shop that repeat themselves.Â
- Rank them in importance.
- See if you can improve them.
- Rinse and repeat.
So here's to small tweaks that lead to big success.Â
