Accentuate the positive, AND eliminate the negative...

Written by Anthony Demangone

What do employees want out of work?  What will push any person to do a good job? And what will hinder those efforts?

Great questions, indeed. Fredrick Herzberg thought they were good questions, as well, and he tried to answer them. He ultimately developed his famous two-factor theory. What he found was this: the things that satisfy and promote good work are independent from the things that promote dissatisfaction.

In other words, the two sets of factors are not related. Providing more things that satisfy may not work if you don't work on eliminating things that dissatisfy employees. And vice versa.

What are those factors?

Factors for Satisfaction

  • Achievement
  • Recognition
  • The work itself
  • Responsibility
  • Advancement
  • Growth

Factors for Dissatisfaction

  • Company policies
  • Supervision
  • Relationship with supervisor and peers
  • Work conditions
  • Salary
  • Status
  • Security

Interesting. Elimination of the negative doesn't necessarily promote the satisfaction. And promotion of the positive doesn't necessarily eliminate dissatisfaction.

It seems like it comes down to a balanced approach, trying to tackle both.

What do you all think?
