Mutilated Currency
A member walks into one of your branches with a bag of currency that is in less than stellar condition. But is it mutilated? That's a big question, because if it is mutilated, the member will need to ship the currency to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Treasury indicates that currency that is not mutilated should be exchanged at the consumer's financial institution.
Here's a webpage from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing that details the difference between mutilated currency and...currency that is not mutilated.
The webpage indicates that mutilated currency includes currency notes which are:
- NOT CLEARLY more than one-half of the original note and/or,Â
- in such condition that the value is questionable and special examination is required to determine its value.
