NAFCU watching Senate effort to move cyber bill

Last evening, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed a motion for the Senate to take a procedural vote on S. 754, the "Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act," later this week. NAFCU has urged lawmakers to secure greater security for financial data through business/government sharing of cyber-threat information.

The NAFCU-backed S. 754, known as CISA, was offered by Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., to help the nation defend against cyber-attacks through quicker, more efficient sharing of cyber-threat information between two sectors.

S. 754 was reported out favorably in March in a 14-1 bipartisan vote by the Select Committee on Intelligence.

NAFCU has previously urged Senate leaders to also consider addressing data security by passing the "Data Security Act of 2015," S. 961, which would create a strong national data security standard for retailers, require notice to consumers in the event of a breach and recognize credit unions' compliance with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.
